Beyond Performative Support @ SIOP

Resources from Society of Industrial-Organizational Psychology (SIOP) 2026 Symposium, “Beyond Performative Support: Measuring What Matters to Build Inclusive Workplaces”

Family-Building Friendly Climate (FBFC) scale

What does it mean for a company to support its employees' family-building efforts? For many companies, family-building starts when a woman announces she's pregnant until she's back at work after taking time off to give birth. But in this day and age, does that timeframe truly encompass the broad scope and nature of family-building?
Our team is using exploratory grounded theory to analyze the lived experiences of employees building their families across diverse family structures, gender identities, and paths to parenthood. Drawing on semi-structured interviews, this study lays the foundation for a measure of organizational climates that support family building in its many forms. By integrating equity, flexibility, and identity inclusivity, it offers a diagnostic framework for organizations to better assist employees navigating modern family formation.
